In Pennsylvania alone, approximately 6% of the population is uninsured. That is roughly $670,000 people that do not have access to valuable mental health care due to the cost of insurance. As cost of treatment continues to rise, 1.5 million people in Pa fall below the poverty level, making it nearly impossible to access care through out of pocket expense.
It is no secret that the world is in a mental health crisis. But did you know that in Pennsylvania, suicide is the 13th leading cause of death overall AND the (3rd) THIRD leading cause of death for individuals age 10-34. We are losing people to mental health illnesses at an alarming rate. Nearly half of all Pa students report feelings of depression, 16% admitted in a survey to planning their suicide. People need access to therapy, counseling and psychiatric care more now than ever.
Theres much evidence to support mental health and addiction disorders go hand and hand. Approximately 14 people die in Pennsylvania every day from drug overdose. Over one million people with a mental health disorder go untreated or undiagnosed. Without a diagnoses and treatment these individuals often resort to self medicating through alcoholism and illegal drug use.
